Saturday 11 August 2007 – UCL Prem. Bourne Town 2 St Neots 3
The Wakes will feel aggrieved to have taken nothing from this encounter having put up a very spirited performance and deserving at least a share of the spoils against big spending St Neots. The opening 20 minutes on a hot day, whilst lively in terms of play, failed to see either keeper tested at all as both sides struggled to create any clear cut openings, and the opening goal when it arrived really was hardly clear cut. St Neots had put the home side under a spell of pressure for a few minutes, but it was a half hit effort from 25 yards which avoided the grasp of Bourne keeper Ben Derbyshire and broke the deadlock in the 21st minute. The home side hardly deserved to be behind having had the best of the opening exchanges, and deservedly levelled within a minute when skipper Aaron Ridout headed home a Johnny Currall corner. The Wakes pressed forward playing attractive football and Nick Hardy & Currall caused the visitors problems with their width. Currall went close again, as did Keith Gray and the home side almost took a half time lead when another excellent Currall cross was almost turned in by a defender. The second period saw the visitors gain a territorial advantage, but once again clear cut chances were at a premium. St Neots had a couple of half chances with headers, but once again took the lead on 70 minutes and once again it had a stroke of fortune - a left wing cross was well dealt with by Aaron Ridout, but a cruel deflection saw it fall kindly for a forward and once again his effort was hardly firmly struck, but crawled into the net in slow motion, wrong footing 2 home defenders on its way. The Wakes refused to lie down and rallied strongly. Ben Houghton was introduced and his pace immediately caused problems. Houghton was denied by a splendid save from the keeper and was then fouled on 80 minutes inside the box allowing Jason Gough to level matters from the spot. The Wakes poured forward and a Mark Walklin free kick was deflected inches wide, Jimmy McDonnell fired over when well placed following another flowing move and Addie Staffieri raced clear, but fired inches over in the final minute. The game was not over though, and the jinx of last season came back to haunt the Wakes as in the dying seconds of injury time the visitors grabbed the points with a fine far post strike. Glenn Notley said “it was a very cruel way to lose a game of football and the players were very down afterwards. They knew they deserved something out of it, but we must be positive - we may not be able to compete with St Neots in terms of playing budget, but we certainly did on the pitch. With a little more composure in front of goal we would have had all 3 points let alone 1”. Team: Ben Derbyshire, Mark Walklin, Matt Holland, Jason Gough, Aaron Ridout, Jimmy McDonnell, Johnny Currall, Tim Quy, Keith Gray, Mark Lovelace (Ben Houghton), Nick Hardy (Addie Staffieri) unused Luke Walker, Seamus Doyle ............................................................................................................................ 18 August 2007 - FA Cup Extra Prelim Round Bourne 2 - Haverhill Rovers 3 Bourne suffered heartbreak in a 5 goal encounter for the second week on the trot, this time visitors Haverhill Rovers stealing the spoils in the 85th minute. It was the visitors who started the brightest and created two good openings before opening the scoring on 18 minutes when a poor clearance fell kindly for a forward to slot past Wakes debutant James Doughty. The Wakes responded quickly and effectively - in their 1st real attack Tim Quy broke well down the right and squared a superb ball which the keeper could only parry into the path of Ben Houghton who opened his account for the Wakes. 4 minutes later the Wakes took the lead when another fine move saw Houghton square for Addie Staffieri who laid the ball into the path of Johnny Currall and he steadied himself before firing a superb effort into the top corner. Currall again went close when he was denied by a superb stop from the visiting keeper and similarly Nick Hardy looked to have extended the Wakes lead before the keeper intervened superbly. The second period saw the visitors claim the lions share of possession, but fail to trouble the home defence, well marshalled by Aaron Ridout. The equaliser when it arrived, came out of the blue when a 20 yard effort flew into the bottom corner. The Wakes tried to rally, but unlike last week, struggled to create any clear cut openings and the game looked to be heading for a replay until the 85th minute when a clever knock down evaded the Wakes defence and it was a visiting forward who reacted quickest to grab the winner. Manager Notley said “We seemed to play in patches today - for 20 minutes we were poor and off the pace and we wondered how many we were going to lose by, but in fairness to the players once they went behind they rallied superbly and for 25 minutes we controlled the game. We got ourselves in front and if we had scored the next goal, we would have gone on to win I'm sure, but once again we shot ourselves in the foot and concede a late one”. Team: James Doughty, Mark Walklin, Steven Hipkiss, Tim Quy, Aaron Ridout, Matt Holland, Johnny Currall, Giuliano Staffieri, Adraino Staffieri, Ben Houghton, Nick Hardy (Rob Pearce) unused Billy Sparks, Chris Hutchcraft, Ben Derbyshire
................................................................................ 21 August 2007 – UCL Premier Division Yaxley 1 Bourne Town 4 The Wakes put their first points of the season on the board with a good victory away at Yaxley on Tuesday night. The Wakes began the brighter of the two sides and played some attractive football on a slick surface - debutant Martin Wormall creating himself an opening but John Feetham saved at full stretch. The home side gradually took control of the game and opened the scoring on 20 minutes with a good goal. A 6 pass move was finished with a low shot across Bourne keeper James Doughty. Yaxley then put the visitors under pressure for a 20 minute spell and there only looked one winner, but 10 minutes before the break the visitors clicked back into gear - a superb move saw Johnny Currall fire inches over and 5 minutes later another impressive run from Currall set up Keith Gray to equalise. In the dying seconds of the half a long kick from Doughty was not dealt with by the home defence and Wormall reacted 1st to open his Wakes account. The Wakes began the second period well and on 50 minutes Wormall reacted 1st again as Feetham failed to deal with a back pass and Wormall unselfishly squared for Keith Gray to extend the lead. This stung the home side into action and for 15 minutes they battered the visitors goal but resolute defending and superb goalkeeping preserved the visitors lead and when Mark Paul lobbed over with 10 minutes left the visitors win looked secure. Wormall was withdrawn and his replacement Addie Staffieri wrapped things up following a good run from Keith Gray. Manager Notley said “We are delighted to get the 1st points on the season and I was also delighted with the way we defended when we had to. Yaxley put us under pressure for one or two periods but we held out well. Martin did superbly well for us up front, as did Keith but it was an all round effort. We now need to take this into Saturday’s game and try to pick up 3 more points”. Team: James Doughty, Mark Walklin, Matt Holland, Jason Gough, Aaron Ridout, Jimmy McDonnell (Simon Barrick), Johnny Currall, Tim Quy, Keith Gray, Martin Wormall (Addie Staffieri), Steven Hipkiss unused Giuliano Staffieri, Nick Hardy, Luke Walker
............................................................................................... Saturday 25 August 2007 UCL Prem. Bourne Town 0 St Ives 4 The Wakes recent good form came to an abrupt halt at the Abbey Lawn on Saturday although the game was effectively over on 20 minutes when the Bourne keeper was dismissed for a professional foul. The visitors began much the brighter as the home side seemed strangely sluggish on a hot day and took the lead on 5 minutes when a header looped over the stranded James Doughty. The wakes created one opening on 12 minutes when Ben Houghton was sent clear, but his effort was saved by the keeper. The next major incident effectively ended the game as a contest when on 19 minutes an innocent collision saw Bourne keeper Doughty require lengthy treatment for a bang on the head but chose to play on and within 60 seconds the still groggy Doughty had spilled a through ball and fouled a forward leaving the referee little option but to point to the spot and dismiss Doughty. Substitute keeper Aaron Bellairs could do nothing about the emphatic spot kick. The second period saw the 10 man Wakes give their all and had either Aaron Ridout or Addie Staffieri converted chances they may have had a glimmer of hope but eventually as the home side ran out of steam, the visitors put the result beyond doubt when in the 80th minute they were awarded a second spot kick, this time for hand ball, and in the 90th minute completed the scoring when a fine through ball was lobbed home. Manager Notley said “The sending off effectively ended the game as a contest, although the ref had little alternative but to send James off. To our credit we did give our all in the second half but the damage was already done. We must learn and learn quickly that we cannot afford to give teams too much time and space to play otherwise we will be in trouble. We now need to go to Wootton and pick something up on Saturday, but in order to do that we need to be more professional all over the pitch”. Team: James Doughty, Mark Walklin, Matt Holland, Jason Gough, Aaron Ridout, Jimmy McDonnell (Aaron Bellairs), Johnny Currall (Nick Hardy), Tim Quy, Keith Gray, Ben Houghton (Addie Staffieri), Stephen Hipkiss unused Luke Walker, Giuliano Staffieri
.............................................................. Saturday 1 September – UCL Premier Division Wootton 1 Bourne Town 1 The Wakes returned from Wotton with a point but will feel it should have been 3. The Wakes began brightly and almost scored in the opening seconds when Mark Lovelace played Ben Houghton in but his effort was well saved. James Doughty was then called into action to keep the scores level at the other end, but overall it was a half of few chances - Aaron Ridout going closest from a Nick Hardy free kick and Ben Houghton firing over from an angle following another Lovelace through ball. The second period saw the visitors create several clear cut openings - Nick Hardy fired wide from one of the best, but it was the youngster who broke the deadlock on the hour with a superb 25 yard curling free kick into the top corner. Hardy again fired into the side netting and Jason Gough headed against the post as the Wakes looked to secure the points. The home side did force a superb block from Doughty to preserve the visitors lead, but he could do nothing to prevent the Wootton equaliser on 70 minutes when a superb lob levelled the scores. The Wakes looked the likelier winners as Tim Quy had an effort cleared off the line and Johnny Currall was sent clear but his effort was saved in the final minutes Manager Notley said “We said before the game to the players that we expected a much better attitude than last week and we did get that. We are maybe slightly disappointed to only come back with a point, but then again a point away from home should be acceptable. The most pleasing thing was we did get last week out of our system quickly, but we now get a good examination of the squad as we lose 5 players from yesterday on holiday or away. On the plus side Steven Hipkiss returns from holiday and youngsters Mark Jones and Liam Palmer are available”. Team: James Doughty, Mark Walklin, Matt Holland, Jason Gough, Aaron Ridout, Jimmy McDonnell, Johnny Currall, Tim Quy, Ben Houghton (Scott Spearink), Mark Lovelace, Nick Hardy unused Seamus Doyle, Billy Sparks, Aaron Bellairs ...................................................................................
Saturday 8 September – UCL Premier Division Bourne Town 2 Long Buckby 3 It was very much a case of “déjà vu” for Bourne on Saturday as for the 3rd time this season they were beaten 3-2 at home and for the 3rd time a very late goal stole the spoils. The Wakes began brightly and opened the scoring on 10 minutes when Mark Lovelace laid the ball into Johnny Currall and he lobbed superbly into the far corner, but 5 minutes later hero turned villain when Currall fouled a Buckby forward to allow the visitors to level from the spot. Both sides had openings as half progressed with Buckby’s Ben Foster missing the clearest just before the break, but half time came and went with the scores level. The second period began with the Wakes looking to take the initiative, but it was the visitors who took the upper hand on the hour when a right wing cross was converted at the far post. The Wakes rallied and created a couple of half chances, but struggled to open up the visitors until the introduction of the lively Mark Jones and the change of system to 3 up front. Suddenly then, the Wakes began to play and create openings and with 15 minutes remaining Jones was fouled to give Jason Gough the chance to level matters from the spot. The drama wasn't finished there though, as in the same incident the Buckby keeper was dismissed for needlessly kicking out at Gough as he retrieved the ball and the Wakes looked set to press on and take the points and may have done so but for a poor decision from a linesman when a through ball sent Jones and the hardworking Scott Spearink clear and Jones was adjudged offside although clearly Spearink was to be the recipient of the ball. The final few minutes saw the visitors play the best football and once again the curse of injury time struck as another cross was converted in the 93rd minute to leave Bourne empty handed again. Manager Notley said “Once again we have pushed one of the leagues big spenders very close and once again we should have taken something from the game but have nothing to show for our efforts. We must stop shooting ourselves in the foot and learn how to close out a game. It is difficult to criticise the players effort and work rate, because they worked very hard but we must start taking responsibility in defensive areas. On the positive side we now get 4 or 5 players available again and by next week Matt Holland will be back from holiday and we will have a full squad to pick from”. Team: James Doughty, Luke Walker (Billy Sparks), Steven Hipkiss, Jason Gough, Aaron Ridout, Simon Barrick, Johnny Currall, Tim Quy, Mark Lovelace (Seamus Doyle), Scott Spearink, Nick Hardy (Mark Jones) ............................................................................................................................................................................ Saturday 15 September - League Cup Bourne Town 4 Wootton 0 The Wakes progressed to the next round of the League Cup & a trip to Boston FC with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Wotton on Saturday. The home side began the brighter and Scott Spearink and Keith Gray had already gone close before Simon Barrick headed the Wakes into a 15th minute lead from a Steven Hipkiss free kick. Johnny Currall doubled the lead on the half hour when he seized on a defensive lapse to score at the far post and Spearink twice had openings, but delayed his shot to allow defenders to block. Ben Derbyshire in the home goal did have to be alert in keeping out a smart free kick to preserve the 2 goal advantage as half time approached. The second period saw the Wakes continue to create opportunities, but were forced to wait until the 70th minute before wrapping up the game when Jimmy McDonnell sent Keith Gray clear to fire home. 10 minutes previously, superb work from Nick Hardy had presented the hard working Spearink with a golden chance to open his 1st team account for the season, but his effort was saved by the legs of the keeper and Simon Barricks follow up was somehow blocked on the line. Impressive substitute Liam Palmer had a close range effort chalked out before Jimmy Mcdonnell completed the rout in the final minute, firing home off the under side of the bar. Manager Notley said” This was a comfortable win, as the scoreline suggests and a very important one in terms of getting a home win on the board. We were forced into one or two changes with James (Doughty) suspended and Jason (Gough) ill and with Matt Holland returning next week from holiday, I will have one or two selection headaches of the right sort again”. Team: Ben Derbyshire, Luke walker, Steven Hipkiss (Rob Pearce), Tim Quy, Aaron Ridout, Jimmy McDonnell, Johnny Currall (Mark Walklin), Simon Barrick, Keith Gray, Scott Spearink (Liam Palmer), Nick Hardy unused Billy Sparks ..................................................................................................................................... Saturday 22 September – FA Vase Bourne Town 2 Yaxley 6 (AET) The Wakes crashed out of the FA Vase in sensational style on Saturday conceding 4 times in extra time to lose a game that once again they will feel they should have won. The visitors started the brighter and put the home side under pressure immediately, but it was the wakes who had the 1st clear opening on 15 minutes - Simon Barrick firing wide when it seemed easier to hit the target and within 60 seconds Mark Paul had punished the wakes for their wastefulness when he slid the visitors in front. 5 minutes later the lead was doubled when the referee awarded Yaxley a penalty coolly converted by Rob ?. The wakes were spurred into action and replied on the half hour when a Rob Pearce free kick was headed home by Luke Walker. Matt Holland then fired over when well placed and Jimmy Mcdonnell was denied by fine defending when he rounded John Feetham in the Yaxley goal. In between Yaxley fired against the home bar but the ball bounced down and out to safety. The second period saw the home side press on and put the visitors on the back foot. Scott Spearink equalised on 65 minutes with a fine effort but real drama was saved for the final frantic few minutes. Spearink again had an effort well saved, then rounded the keeper only to be brought down but Feetham escaped with a yellow card, then Spearink again fired over when he looked certain to score on 90 minutes and there wasstill time for Rob Pearce to cut in form the right, but fir straight at the keeper from 8 yards when either side would have been a goal. Extra time belonged to the visitors from the moment they broke to take a 3-2 lead and the home side crumbled with Yaxley scoring 3 more and could have had 1 or 2 more with Bournes only hope disappearing half way through the 1st half when Rob Pearce was scythed down in the box but the referee was the only person in the ground who felt it was a fair tackle. Manager Notley said: “Once again we shot ourselves in the foot by not taking the clear chances we created and were punished for our wastefulness. We had 3 golden chances in the last 5 minutes of normal time, but we can have no complaints in the end although the margin of defeat was harsh. We must now pick ourselves up and concentrate on picking up league points”! Team: Ben Derbyshire, Luke Walker, Matt Holland, Tim Quy, Aaron Ridout, Jimmy McDonnell, Mark Walklin (Jason Gough), Simon Barrick, Scott Spearink, Liam Palmer (Nick Hardy), Rob Pearce unused Glenn Notley ..................................................................... Saturday 29 September – UCL Premier Newport Pagnell 5 Bourne Town 3 The Wakes miserable defensive run continued at Newport on Saturday and with it another 3 points were thrown away. The wakes began brightly and opened the scoring in the 2nd minute when Keith Gray fired home at the near post from a Jason Gough corner, but the lead lasted a mere 4 minutes when hesitant defending allowed a forward in to level. The visitors then took control of the half with Rob Pearce and Nick Hardy particularly lively down either flank and it was from a Pearce cross that Simon barrick restored the Wakes lead in the 25th minute. Scott Spearink then shot wide and was denied twice by offside flags - the 1st was marginal, but the second a poor decision. Spearink was not to be denied though and from another Pearce corner, headed home the visitors 3rd in the 44th minute, but once again slack defending allowed the hosts to reduce arrears immediately on the stroke of half time. The second half was a different story, with the Wakes resorting to long ball football leaving Pearce and Hardy as virtual spectators and the hosts in complete control . The equaliser arrived on 65 minutes with a crisp effort from 20 yards, but far too much space was allowed on the edge of the box and with 5 minutes remaining, a corner was forced over the line to put the home side in front for the 1st time and the scoring completed in the final minute with another fine strike to leave the wakes empty handed. Manager Notley said” This was nothing short of 3 points thrown away. Pagnell looked a poor side in the 1st half and we played some good stuff and Scotts goal should have put us 5-0 up, not 3-2 as the half time score was. Our defending at times was diabolical and it must improve. We are creating plenty of chances going forward, but must stop conceding bad goals at the other end. I have no complaints if teams create good goals against us as Boston did, but will not accept my players not taking responsibility”. Team: Ben Derbyshire, Jason Gough, Steven Hipkiss (Liam Palmer), Tim Quy, Matt Holland, Jimmy McDonnell, Rob Pearce, Simon Barrick, Keith Gray, Scott Spearink, Nick hardy (Johnny Currall) unused Luke walker
